WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK:

Pump Street BakeryThis artisan bakery and café has earned national acclaim for its slow-fermented sourdough, delicate pastries, and bean-to-bar chocolate, made right on the premises. It’s a favourite with locals and visitors alike, and rightly so – the seasonal Danish pastries and signature Eccles cakes are divine. Their courtyard seating is perfect for a lazy morning coffee.

The Crown and Castle –  a wonderfully refined restaurant, this stylish spot pairs elegant, seasonal cooking with excellent wines and warm service. Expect dishes like roast Suffolk lamb, fish from the day boats in Orford, and creative vegetarian plates. The terrace has sweeping views of the castle – perfect for al fresco dining in warmer months.

A true local institution, the Butley Orford Oysterage is a no-frills seafood restaurant has been family-run for generations. It’s all about ultra-fresh produce – smoked mackerel, crab, prawns, and the famous Butley oysters, harvested just downriver. The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, making it a brilliant spot for lunch after a coastal walk.

Orford’s welcoming village pub, The Jolly Sailor is full of maritime memorabilia and charm. Enjoy real ales and hearty dishes like Suffolk pork belly or beer-battered cod and chips by the fire or in the sunny beer garden. Dogs and muddy boots welcome!

WHAT TO DO:

Commissioned by Henry II in the 12th century, Orford Castle is one of England’s best-preserved keeps. Explore the maze-like interior, with its original chapel and well chamber, then climb to the roof for panoramic views over the Ness and surrounding marshlands. A must for history lovers.

Orford Ness National Nature Reserve, managed by the National Trust, is a wild, remote shingle spit that was once a top-secret military testing site. Today, it’s a haven for wildlife including rare birds and wildflowers. Take the ferry from Orford Quay and spend a day exploring the haunting landscape, punctuated by crumbling bunkers and derelict laboratories.

Set off from Orford Quay on a guided boat trip to discover the river’s unique ecology of the River Alde. You’ll be lead past salt marshes, reedbeds, and maybe even spot seals. Orford River Trips and other local operators offer relaxing cruises with fascinating commentary on the area’s natural and human history.

Just a 15-minute drive away, Snape Maltings is a beautifully restored Victorian maltings complex. It’s now home to the renowned Aldeburgh Music Festival, boutique shops, art galleries, and a riverside café. It’s the perfect place to browse for gifts, hear live music, or enjoy a peaceful walk along the Alde.
