We are delighted you have chosen to spend some time at our much cherished Orford retreat. We have had great fun renovating the cottage and have given much thought to its extensive modernisation with an important nod , we hope, to preserving many of its original features. Our own family connection to the Suffolk coast goes back nearly fifty years and we have fond memories of Orford in particular from our early married days. I don’t think we ever imagined we would own a property here - although there was always a hankering- but how thrilled we are that we now do .
Orford is an unusually magical spot, whether on a rain-washed February afternoon in the teeth of a stiff south westerly or on a halcyon blue early summer morning. A village of contrasts: the constant ebb and flow of bustle on high days and holidays offset by a tranquil weekday hush as the tide of visitors recedes. All year round the landscape remains hauntingly romantic, the light intense, whilst the tinkling of small boats around the quay provides a gentle soundtrack on the ever-present salty breeze . They say locally that no two days in Orford are ever the same. How true that is.
Whether birdwatching, photography, messing around in boats, dog walking, or good old fashioned rambling is your bag, there’s something for everyone. With an excellent village shop, butcher, bakery and several excellent places to eat, you will find there’s no need to stray very far off Orford's own very special beaten track.
Enjoy your stay!
The Location
Orford, tucked away on the Suffolk coast, is an absolute hidden gem that’s perfect for a laid-back getaway. You will feel like you have stepped back in time, with winding streets, wisteria soak cottages, historic buildings, and a scenic riverside that’s perfect for a leisurely stroll.
The heart of Orford is its impressive castle, a towering Norman keep that's been around since the 12th century. It’s a fun place to explore, and the views from the top are simply stunning. Down by the quay, you’ll find fishing boats coming and going or if lucky enough to have a boat...
of your own, pack a picnic and head out onto the spit.
Nature lovers will adore Orford Ness, a wild and beautiful shingle spit just across the water. It’s a fantastic place for a walk, packed with wildlife and fascinating remnants of its secretive past – just remember to book your ferry ticket in advance!
In the village, you can pop into cute tea rooms, friendly pubs, a smokehouse and the renowned Pump Street Bakery. The locals are warm and welcoming, and there’s always something going on, from community events to lively festivals.
