We have known the area for several years now and fell in love with Garrett House at Snape Maltings when we first viewed the property over 8 years ago. The property is so full of character and is especially cosy in the Winter months, while still being a fabulous base for exploring the surrounding areas all year round.
The back door accesses ‘The Courtyard’ which is a private garden with mature fruit trees and lovely seating areas to enjoy a morning coffee or an early evening drink in the sunshine.
There is so much to explore in and around Snape Maltings including some lovely shops, cafes, restaurants and some stunning walks. Located on the banks of the River Alde you are surrounded by nature but very close to Aldeburgh (and the beach), Woodbridge and Orford. We think it is an ideal spot to take time to relax, unwind, and discover this beautiful part of Suffolk.
We have recently completed extensive renovation works at Garrett House which we hope will enhance your stay - enjoy!!
The Location
Snape is a charming village located in Suffolk, about 5 miles inland from the coastal town of Aldeburgh. It sits along the River Alde, which winds through the surrounding countryside. The village has a rich history, with roots tracing back to Saxon times, and features traditional Suffolk architecture, including brick cottages and flint churches.
Snape Maltings, located just outside the village, is a renowned arts complex and cultural hub. Originally a Victorian-era maltings (where barley was processed for beer), it has been beautifully repurposed into galleries, shops, cafes, and a concert hall. The concert hall is home to the... annual Aldeburgh Festival, founded by composer Benjamin Britten. Snape Maltings is a popular destination for art lovers, offering year-round music, exhibitions, and nature-inspired experiences.
The surrounding area is rich with natural beauty. The River Alde and its marshes attract birdwatchers and walkers, especially in the nearby RSPB North Warren Nature Reserve. To the east is the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), known for its diverse wildlife, heathlands, and charming coastal villages like Orford and Thorpeness. The region is perfect for walking, cycling, and exploring quiet, scenic landscapes.
