The Freston Forge
Overview
Once the working heart of village life, The Smithy’s Cottage, The Farrier’s Shop and The Workshop now form a beautifully characterful trio of holiday retreats, each with its own story and a far gentler pace of life. Where sparks once flew and hard graft was the order of the day, you’ll now find log fires,... big tables, deep sofas and the simple pleasure of slowing down together.
Each property has been thoughtfully restored to honour its industrial past while ensuring modern comfort. Exposed beams, historic details and generous spaces sit alongside well-equipped kitchens, welcoming living areas and private outdoor spaces, making these homes ideal for family gatherings, group getaways or stays with friends. Whether you’re spreading out across sociable open-plan rooms or retreating to a quiet bedroom at the end of the day, these are spaces designed for easy, unhurried living.
Set in and around the charming village of Freston, the location ties the collection together. Riverside walks along the Orwell, the much-loved Freston Boot, Suffolk Food Hall and the wider Shotley Peninsula are all close by, with the coast within easy reach. Days can be as active or as relaxed as you like, followed by evenings that tend to stretch out a little longer than planned.
Features
The Freston Forge brings together three beautifully restored historic buildings; The Smithy’s Cottage, The Farrier’s Shop and The Workshop, each with its own personality, layout and story, but all sharing a common past and a wonderfully relaxed approach to modern stays.
The Smithy’s Cottage is the most intimate of the trio, a former 17th-century blacksmith’s cottage now perfectly suited to couples or small families. It offers two king-size ensuite bedrooms, a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove, a well-equipped kitchen and a light-filled garden room that opens onto a private garden. Calm, characterful and quietly charming, it’s ideal... for slower stays and easy countryside escapes.
The Farrier’s Shop is larger and more overtly sociable, designed for families or groups who enjoy spending time together. Sleeping up to six guests, it pairs historic scale with modern comforts, including two king-size ensuite bedrooms, a twin room, a generous open-plan living space with a log burner and large Smart TV, and a private garden. A standout feature is the original forge, now cleverly repurposed as a pizza oven, making evenings here as fun as they are relaxed.
The Workshop is the boldest and most flexible of the three, offering space, drama and a playful layout that works especially well for multi-generational stays. With generous open-plan living areas, characterful industrial details and cleverly designed sleeping arrangements, including loft-style spaces for children, it comfortably accommodates larger family groups who want room to spread out without losing that sense of togetherness.
Together, the three properties can be booked individually or in combination, offering a rare opportunity for friends or extended families to holiday close to one another while still enjoying their own space.
