The Smithy’s Cottage
Overview
The Smithy’ Cottage is a wonderfully characterful holiday retreat with a story to tell. Dating back to the 17th century, this former blacksmith’s cottage once rang with the sound of hammer on iron; today, it’s a far more leisurely affair. Thoughtfully restored, the cottage blends centuries-old character with modern comfort, creating a space that feels... warm, relaxed and full of quiet charm.
The cottage comfortably accommodates up to four guests, making it ideal for couples, friends or a small family escape. Two generous king-size bedrooms each have their own ensuite shower room. Time together comes easily here, from relaxed evenings in the sitting room to shared meals in the light-filled garden room, which is perfect for dining, reading or simply unwinding while the garden does its thing outside. The well-equipped kitchen sits at the heart of the home, making slow breakfasts and unhurried suppers part of the fun.
Set in the charming village of Freston, the location is just as appealing as the property itself. Riverside walks along the Orwell are right on the doorstep, with the much-loved Freston Boot directly across the road. From foodie favourites like the Suffolk Food Hall to scenic strolls around Pin Mill and the Shotley Peninsula, or a day out on the Suffolk coast, this is a wonderfully placed retreat for a stay filled with variety and quiet enjoyment.
Features
Life at The Smithy' Cottage revolves around easy, effortless moments. Mornings begin in the kitchen, where coffee brews and plans are loosely made. Evenings naturally drift towards the sitting room, where the wood-burning stove takes centre stage and conversation stretches a little longer than planned. In between, the garden room offers a bright, calm space for shared meals, puzzles, reading or simply gazing out at the garden as the seasons roll by.
The kitchen is well equipped and thoughtfully laid out, making cooking feel like part of the holiday rather than a chore, whether that’s a leisurely breakfast before... a walk along the river or supper after the pub. There’s also the welcome practicality of a downstairs WC and utility space, keeping everything ticking along smoothly behind the scenes.
Upstairs, two king-size bedrooms each come with their own ensuite shower room, giving everyone a proper retreat at the end of the day. It’s a layout that works brilliantly whether you’re holidaying with friends or escaping as a small family, sociable when you want it, private when you don’t.
